Absences

If you are reporting your child is absent from school, for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible by calling the school on 020 8946 6666 and leaving a message on the absence line.

Applying for leave of absence during term time
Leave of absence is authorised at the discretion of the Governors and Headteacher and is not an automatic right. However, some requests such as religious observance, education off-site, medical appointments, interviews and external examinations may be authorised. Amendments to the Education Act, which came into force on 1st September 2013, say that leave of absence during term time should only be authorised in exceptional circumstances and will not include family holidays.

If you wish to apply for leave of absence during term time you should complete the revised leave of absence form, available from the school office providing supporting documentation as necessary. The request will be considered and you will receive a response within one week. If the request is denied and families still decide to take the leave, the absence will be recorded as unauthorised. It should be noted that some secondary schools request attendance information as part of their application process.

Bishop Gilpin School is committed to promoting good attendance as it has been shown that regular attendance has an impact on a child’s ability to learn and their overall achievement.
