I Love Reading

I Love Reading is a school-wide initiative to encourage all our children to read for pleasure and to develop a genuine passion for books.

Research, and experience, shows that children who read for pleasure not only read more fluently but also achieve better results at school. We believe reading regularly and using a range of books and texts forms the foundation of a good education and also supports and develops creative writing. There are many elements to the I Love Reading scheme.

  • Author visits – We have regular visits from published authors, who inspire our children to enjoy books and also to have confidence to express their ideas in their own writing.
  • Book Club – This initiative was started in 2012 by a group of parents in Year 4, working closely with their class teacher. The children are divided into six groups and given a new book to read every half term, funded by the classes’ termly cake sales. Each group has two or three 30-minute sessions about the book with a parent helper every two weeks. In these sessions they can discuss what they like and don’t like about the book; search for interesting words and phrases; read a section together, etc. Then at the end of the half term, each group writes a book review or, alternatively, acts out a small scene from the book. And, occasionally, the children get refreshments (biscuits and squash), just like in a real book club!
  • Book corners – Every classroom has a book corner, designed to be an inviting and inspiring space for reading. With the support of the Friends of Bishop Gilpin (FOBG) we are refreshing the stock and shelving in each classroom to make sure the books are up-to-date and displayed in an appealing way.
  • Library refurbishment – FOBG is also in the process of raising money to redesign, refurbish and restock the school library.
  • Reading buddies – In Spring 2013 children from Year 1 were given the chance to read regularly to a ‘buddy’ in Year 4. This gave all the children involved a big confidence boost.
