BG School Fund

Currently around 50% of families contribute to the school fund; we are aiming for 80%, so please donate today.

Bishop Gilpin needs money to help pay for buildings maintenance, computers and technology, and school improvements, which are not covered by the budget from Merton Council. Like most voluntary-aided (church) schools, we ask parents to make regular voluntary contributions towards the financing of the school.

All contributions are held by the Governing Body in an account called the BG School Fund, which is separate from both the main school budget and from the Friends of Bishop Gilpin’s fundraising. The BG School Fund is a registered charity and has a Treasurer and four other trustees.

We use some of the BG School Fund to pay a fixed sum into the Southwark Diocese Maintenance Scheme (£7,800 per year), which helps to fund the 10% contribution all church schools have to make towards capital building projects. In recent years, this scheme has enabled us to unlock funding to buy new adult WCs, the nursery canopy and nursery toilets. Any money left in the BG School Fund, after the contribution to the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education (SDBE) scheme and the 10% contribution toward any other capital projects the school may have agreed to do with the Diocese, can be used for school improvements.

As well as the upkeep and development of the school buildings, a key area supported by the BG School Fund is Information and Computer Technology (ICT). We don’t just want the children to learn how to use computers, we want to make the best use of them as educational tools, whether it’s to practise phonics, assist children learning English as a foreign language, enable them to carry out up-to-date research, use apps to practise numeracy skills, or learn how to do computer programming. Just as computers have become invaluable tools at home and work, they are an essential component of a modern education.

We have an interactive whiteboard in every classroom, an ICT suite with 30 PCs, and a bank of iPads, all of which is supported by a large server and WiFi network. Contributions to the BG School Fund are vital in order to maintain all these computers and to be able to develop and improve the equipment we can offer our children.

We would like every family to make a donation to the BG School Fund. We are suggesting a donation of £10 a month, per child, which amounts to just 30p a day. With this level of contribution from everyone, we can continue to improve the school environment and give our children the best educational resources.

Regular monthly payments from parents into the BG School Fund help us to plan our annual expenditure better. In return for your donations the Governors are committed to listening to the views of parents and staff, in order to inform decision-making, and providing regular updates on how money is spent.
